Rhinoplasty Recovery Instructions

It is very important to take care of your nose after your rhinoplasty. If not, you can have infection or your nose implant may go to the side of your nose. These are some reminders to avoid these complications:

  • During your first night after the rhinoplasty, lie with head slightly lift up. It will prevent bleeding of the nose.
  • Have all the prescribed medications such as pain relievers and antibiotics ready so take them as instructed by your doctors. If not, it will take longer for your nose to heal.
  • Apply ice compress to reduce the swelling and bruising. Be very careful in applying the compress. Don’t put the whole weight on your nose. Just let the compress touch your nose.
  • Eat plenty of fruits and drink lots of water during the first 2 weeks to avoid having colds.
  • Don’t bend over with the head lower than you heart. It increases the circulation to your head which may result in bleeding.
  • For the first few weeks, don’t engage in sports or any physical activities that require you to run or to weight objects.
  • If you wear eyeglasses, don’t put the eyeglasses on the nose bridge. Tape it to your forehead or do not use eyeglasses for a few days if you can. Don’t wear contact lenses. It will be painful for the tissues near your nose when you wear your contact lenses. It is also dangerous to the alignment of the implant.
  • If you rest well for a week and take all the medications, you can go back to work 1 to 2 weeks after your rhinoplasty.
  • You need to take care of your nose for the next 8 months of so because the implant doesn’t have good anchorage to the nose tissues yet. Don’t go to crowded places where your nose can be accidentally bumped.

There are many rhinoplasty patients who have their implants for more than 30 years. With proper care, you can also enjoy years of having beautiful nose. The first 2 weeks are the most critical so be very very careful of your nose during these times.
