Rhinoplasty and Teenagers

Learn What the Pros and Cons Are for Rhinoplasty for Teenagers

Being a teenager is not that easy. So many things change between thirteen and nineteen – physically, emotionally, hormonally and mentally – that sometimes it can get pretty overwhelming. Teenagers struggle with self-esteem issues every day: conscious about how the world perceives them and, at the same time, uncertain about who they really want to be. That’s why a lot of teens today turn to rhinoplasty. In a survey made in 2002, researchers discovered that over 220,000 young people under 18 have undergone rhinoplasty surgery.

But is rhinoplasty for teenagers really advisable? Here are some things you should consider if you or your teenager is thinking about undergoing cosmetic surgery.

Find Out Whether or Not Rhinoplasty Surgery is for You

1. Psychological Readiness
Undergoing rhinoplasty is a big decision. This kind of surgery can change a person’s looks drastically. Are you (or your teenager) ready for this big change? Even though you might think this change will be for the better, know that people are going to notice. People in school will talk about it. Can you handle both the positive and the negative attention?

2. A Life-long Procedure
Make sure your teenager also understands that this procedure will be a life-long one. There’s no turning back. Plus, he or she will have to keep up with follow-up procedures in the coming years. This means he/she will have to have the resources to do so for the rest of his/her life.

3. Age Matters
It would be fool-hardy for a thirteen-year-old to get a breast augmentation when she hasn’t even finished growing yet. There are some physical features that a teen will eventually grow out of (baby fat, acne, etc.) so rhinoplasty may not exactly be the proper solution to the problem.

Know that the decision to undergo rhinoplasty surgery is a serious one. Think about it thoroughly. And talk to your doctor about the possible risks.
